Book of the Month: November 2018

Educated by Tara Westover

Ever since the whole A Million Little Pieces fiasco, I’ve had a hard time enjoying a memoir. Educated by Tara Westover has undone the memoir-avoidance I’ve been engaging in the last 10 or so years.* When my friend Jill sent me a message telling me I needed to read this book, I picked up a copy that day. If Jill recommends a book to me, it’s a pretty safe bet that it’s something I’ll enjoy.

As someone who tries her best to only experience pleasant emotions (I avoid sad movies, tv shows, books, songs… anything that would bum me out really), I loved the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. Westover manages to make you feel some mega-conflicting emotions, which really helps you understand her story. I found myself feeling angry but sympathetic, sad but relieved, happy but guilty, and the list goes on.

If you’re up for it, I definitely recommend giving this book a read. It’ll leave you feeling hopeful, empowered and grateful you weren’t raised by doomsday preppers.

*Ok, I say that, but OF COURSE I read Yes Please by Amy Poehler, Bossypants by Tina Fey & and all things Mindy Kaling.
